On May 19, Germany celebrated Diversity Day, an initiative dedicated to increasing the visibility of diversity in the workplace. Inspired by this year’s motto, “when diversity wins, we all win,” SmallData joined the celebration with an interactive activity during the doctoral researchers’ biweekly progress seminar.
Both in-person and online participants took part in a quiz focused on international diversity in academia. Through a series of questions, participants learned about international researchers shaping science in Germany, German scientists contributing to research abroad, and broader migration trends within the academic sector.
It’s important to note that, according to Wissenschaft weltoffen 2025, based on data from the Federal Statistical Office, international researchers accounted for 28% of all doctoral researchers enrolled at German universities during the 2023/24 winter semester — a figure that continues to grow.
We believe that diverse experiences enrich not only our personal lives, but science as well, and we are very grateful to all doctoral researchers who took part in this activity.
