How to Thrive in the German Academic Landscape

Last week, SMART, jointly with the Equity and Diversity Office, hosted the course “How to Thrive in the German Academic Landscape” for international researchers, led by Pamela Stenzel.

The session offered a structured look into the German academic system, unpacking how universities, research organizations, and funding bodies interact, and where opportunities emerge within this ecosystem.

Participants explored key aspects of academic career development, from early-stage positions to professorship, alongside critical decision points around mobility, networking, and pathways beyond academia.

Through case studies and peer exchange, the group connected these insights to their own career trajectories. The course also addressed cultural perspectives and communication styles that shape collaboration and integration within German academia.

By the end of the session, participants had not only gained a clearer understanding of the system, but also developed practical strategies to navigate it with greater confidence.
