Engaging the Next Generation: SmallData at Science Days 2025

Early Career Researchers from the CRC 1597 Small Data took part in Science Days (October 23–26), one of the largest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fairs in the German-speaking world, which this year celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Through interactive exhibitions and direct engagement with researchers from various disciplines, the event aims to bring science and technology closer to younger generations — sparking curiosity about recent developments and inspiring interest in scientific careers.

At this occasion, SmallData researchers showcased several hands-on demonstrations that portrayed the predicting capabilities and limitations of Neural Networks, one of the key tools utilised in small data research. They illustrated the paradigm of search engines on topographical maps, showing the contrast between an initial random search with no previous input versus target-oriented exploration with data integration; they explored the complexities of language interpretation by Large Language Models through an online life-threatening scenario simulator; and they tested visitors’ prompting skills in a series of ChatGPT-based challenges.

We are thrilled with the enthusiasm and participation at this year’s event and would like to thank all young visitors for their curiosity and excitement. Special thanks also go to the Technical Faculty for this joint collaboration and their continued partnership. We look forward to next year’s edition!
