SMART Venture Scientist Club

Last week, SMART doctoral researchers joined the first session of the Venture Scientist Club: From Research to Startup Concepts with Dr. Christoph Mårtensson.

The session focused on how scientific insights can be shaped into early-stage startup ideas. Not through traditional business plans, but by applying venture-studio-inspired frameworks and asking bold “what if” questions.

Key takeaways included:

  • The mindset of a “venture scientist”
  • How GPT-based tools can support ideation
  • Hands-on practice turning research into venture concepts

According to the participants feedback:

“ It was an inspiring workshop with Dr. Christoph Mårtensson. We learned about the value of asking questions that open new possibilities and thinking in the white space”— Masako Kaufmann (A05)

“As a PhD student aiming to develop my research into a startup, the Venture Scientist Club kick-off session was incredibly helpful. It provided a concrete framework to start translating my idea into a ‘What if?’ question. This gave me the exact first steps to assess its commercial potential” — Hasan Asif (C04)

A big thank to all participants for contributing to a strong start of the Venture Scientist Club at SMART.
