Celebrating German Diversity Day: Equity & Diversity Quiz at SmallData

In celebration of German Diversity Day, SmallData hosted an Equity & Diversity Quiz as part of our internal Progress Seminar on May 27, 2025. The German Diversity Day is a nationwide initiative promoting awareness and action around diversity and inclusion — values we actively embrace in our CRC.

Our special quiz session sparked an engaging competition among doctoral researchers, which encouraged reflection on topics such as gender representation in academia, international student experiences, and institutional efforts in equity.

The quiz was structured into five themed sections, each highlighting a different aspect of equity and diversity:

• Numbers game: Key statistics on gender representation in academia and examined the diverse nationalities represented among our doctoral researchers.
• DEI concepts: Practical realities faced by international students, and shared useful everyday knowledge for navigating life in Germany.
• “Who Am I?”: Participants to identified a prominent figure within the SmallData community, recognizing their contributions to equity, medical research, and scientific leadership.
• Promoting Diversity and Gender Equality: Institutional efforts to promote diversity and gender equality, including recognitions such as the Total E-Quality Certificate.
• Field-Specific Trivia: Diving into historical and scientific milestones, and celebrating pioneers like Ada Lovelace and C.R. Rao who helped shape the fields of computing and statistics.

Congratulations to our winning participants, who showcased an impressive knowledge of Equity and Diversity topics.
